What size bin do I need for a garage cleanout?
A 14-yard bin is a starting point for a smaller garage cleanout. Greenway lists this container at 12 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet high. Larger 20-, 30- and 40-yard bins are also available.
Choose based on what you are throwing away, not the size of your garage. Remove anything you are keeping or donating, then photograph the remaining items. Include measurements of bulky furniture or shelving so Greenway can recommend a size. Concrete, soil and other heavy materials need separate consideration because weight can become the limit before the bin is full.

What can go in the bin—and what stays out?
Greenway collects materials including wood, scrap metal, plastic and paper. List your actual items when booking—for example, broken wooden shelves, metal storage racks or old furniture—and confirm that they are accepted in your load. Mention mattresses and upholstered furniture specifically.
Keep these out of the mixed-waste bin:
- Paint, solvents, fuel, pesticides, batteries and propane cylinders: use the City’s household hazardous waste guidance to find the appropriate return or drop-off option.
- TVs, computers and other electronics: use Ottawa’s electronic-waste options. Electronics are not accepted at household hazardous waste events.
- Tires, refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers: arrange separate handling. The City’s special-items guide explains disposal routes.
For other items, check Ottawa’s Waste Explorer before loading. If you are also removing old building materials, flag that before booking; suspected asbestos needs specialist handling, not a regular garage-cleanout load.
How much does it cost, and how long can I keep it?
The total depends on bin size, material type, weight and rental length. Get a quote for your load and dates that specifies:
- Delivery, pickup and disposal charges
- Included rental days and weight allowance
- Charges for extra days, excess weight or an additional collection
- Material-specific fees and taxes
Confirm the pickup arrangement when booking: whether collection is scheduled for a set date or you need to request it. A container’s volume and its included weight allowance are different limits.
Where will the bin go? Do I need a permit?
The bin sits outside the garage, in a location the delivery truck can reach. Leave enough room to open the garage, carry items out and use the bin’s loading door. Send Greenway a photo of the proposed spot, including nearby wires, branches and the truck’s approach. The bin dimensions alone do not show the space needed for delivery.

How should I load it?
Keep reusable items and special-disposal materials separate before you start. Follow Greenway’s loading instructions, stay within the fill line and weight allowance, and keep the loading area clear of children and pets. Leave the truck’s access route unobstructed for pickup.
What does Greenway do with the material after pickup?
Greenway’s service includes sorting and material recovery, supported by proprietary processing technology. Its recycling operations use sorting lines, hand sorting and partnerships with material recovery facilities to separate suitable recyclables from mixed waste.
Materials such as metal, wood and cardboard can be recovered for reuse or recycling instead of treating the entire load as garbage. What can be recovered depends on the contents and condition of the load; not everything is recyclable. Confirm any separation instructions for your materials when booking.
